SECTION 1: THE 6 GOLDEN RULES OF THE ROAD

  1. Never turn right directly in front of a car coming toward you. Wait for them to pass first.
  2. Always look to your right. Give right of way to any car coming from your right side.
  3. Obey the lines on the road. Broken lines mean you can cross if it's safe. Continuous (solid) lines mean do not cross and do not overtake.
  4. At a roundabout (traffic circle), wait your turn. Cars already driving inside the circle go first.
  5. Stop and Give Way signs mean you are last. If you are facing one of these signs, every other car goes before you.
  6. Always drive on the left side of the road.

SECTION 2: THE DRIVING NUMBERS TO MEMORIZE

Distances & Speeds

  • Driving at 60 km/h → leave a gap of 4 cars behind the next vehicle.
  • Driving at 90 km/h → leave a gap of 6 cars behind the next vehicle.
  • General speed limit in towns/cities (urban areas) is 60 km/h.
  • Your reaction distance at 60 km/h is 8.3 metres.
  • Your total stopping distance at 120 km/h is 130 metres.

Accidents & Breakdowns

  • If your car breaks down, place your red warning triangle 30 to 50 metres behind your vehicle.
  • If you are in a serious accident, you must report it to the police within 24 hours.

Ages & Licenses

  • To drive a public bus (PSV), you must be at least 25 years old.
  • The minimum age to drive heavy vehicles is 18 years old.

SECTION 3: TRAFFIC LIGHTS (ROBOTS) & LIGHT RULES

How Traffic Lights Change (The Sequence)

  • Green (Go) → Amber/Yellow (Prepare to stop) → Red (Stop).
  • From Red → it goes back to Green.
  • Quick Tip: It can never go straight from Red to Amber, and it can never go straight from Amber to Green.
  • Flashing Amber light: Give way to cars on your right.

Headlights and Night Driving

  • Turn your headlights ON between 5:30 PM and 6:00 AM.
  • When driving behind another car at night, dip your headlights (put them on low beam) so you don't blind the driver in front.
  • If an oncoming car forgets to dip their bright lights, look slightly to the left side of the road to protect your eyes.
  • Never use rear fog lights on a clear, bright day. Only use fog lights during heavy mist or bad weather.

SECTION 4: ROAD SIGNS MADE SIMPLE

  1. Circles = Regulatory / Mandatory Signs (Strict laws telling you what you must or must not do).
  2. Triangles = Danger Warning Signs (Warns you about a hazard ahead like a sharp curve or narrow bridge).
  3. Informative Signs (Helpful directions or guidance).
    • "De-restriction" sign means a speed limit has ended.
    • "Restriction" sign means you must not go faster than the speed shown.
  4. Traffic Light Signals (Robots).
  5. Carriage Markings (Lines painted on the road).

Stop Sign vs. Give Way Sign

  • STOP Sign: You MUST bring your car to a complete stop behind the white line, even if the road is empty.
  • GIVE WAY Sign: Slow down and check. If the road is clear, you can keep going without stopping fully.

SECTION 5: VEHICLE CLASSES & QUICK FACTS

The Vehicle Classes

  • Class 1: Buses (Age 18+ to apply, 25 to drive publicly)
  • Class 2: Lorries / Heavy Trucks (Age 18+)
  • Class 3: Motorbikes (Age 16+)
  • Class 4: Standard Cars / Light Vehicles (Age 16+)
  • Class 5: Tractors and Construction Machines (Age 18+)
  • Note: Any vehicle weighing more than 2,300 kg is a "Heavy Vehicle."

Quick Facts

  • Motorbikes do not carry fire extinguishers, do not have a reverse gear, and can only carry one passenger.
  • A heavy truck pulling two trailers must have 3 reflectors and carry 2 red warning triangles.
  • Blind Spot: The area around your car that you cannot see in your mirrors. Look over your shoulder to check it.
  • Zebra Crossing: You must STOP and let pedestrians cross first.
  • Driving Downhill: Put your car into a lower gear when driving down a steep hill to keep control.
  • Seatbelts: You do not need to wear a seatbelt ONLY when you are actively reversing your car.
  • Petrol Stations: Always switch off your engine before filling your tank with fuel.
